Winchester Wardens receive accreditation

NTRC

On Wednesday 12th August the Winchester City Council Neighbourhood Wardens were officially welcomed into the Extended Police Family when they received accreditation under the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme, as authorised by the Police Reform Act 2002.

Inspector Jim Peglar presented the Neighbourhood Wardens with their certificates and identification cards at an official ceremony to celebrate the occasion. The event was held at Abbey House, the official residence of the Mayor of Winchester. Councillor Dominic Hiscock, the Mayor of Winchester, opened the proceedings with a short speech which highlighted the contribution the Neighbourhood Wardens make to Community Safety and recognised the working relationships they have built with a variety of partner agencies.

The event was attended by representatives from Hampshire Constabulary, Hampshire Fire & Rescue, Winchester BID, Hampshire County Council’s ACSOs, local Councillors and various council employees who regularly work with the wardens in the Winchester Community Safety Partnership.

Accreditation provides the wardens with a range of powers that may be used to tackle low level anti social behaviour and environmental crime, but equally important is the recognition of the contribution they make to Community Safety and helping to enhance community cohesion. The wardens work closely with a range of partner agencies to tackle various issues of concern within the local communities, thus helping to drive down crime and the fear of crime.

Inspector Jim Peglar of Hampshire Constabulary commented: "The accreditation of Winchester City Council Wardens enhances our already strong local partnership. The specific enforcement powers given to the wardens will be a positive step towards further reducing anti-social behaviour and disorder in Winchester. The power to demand a name and address and take away the anonymity of people behaving badly in particular is very useful. The information gained is then shared, allowing the Winchester District Partnership to target those whose behaviour impacts on the peaceful existence of the community."
