Giving evidence can be an anxiety provoking experience and yet professionals from all disciplines are now more frequently having to attend court as witnesses. Few however, receive training on how to give evidence.
Good evidence is essential to success in a court case. Too many cases are lost in circumstances where legal arguments are good but the supporting evidence is poor. This not only incurs huge financial losses but can also severely affect staff morale.
This one-day course presents a practical guide to understanding court proceedings and the skills necessary to be an effective witness. Enhancing witness performance, thereby increasing their confidence and credibility, which maximises the likelihood of a successful result in court.
This intensive and highly practical day provides a real experiential learning opportunity facilitated by Charles Holt a freelance advocate for both the local authority and private firms. Charles has had a comprehensive legal career undertaking most aspects of both criminal and civil proceedings. For the last ten years, as a solicitor and barrister, he has concentrated on criminal work undertaking both prosecuting and defence advocacy in Magistrates Courts, Crown Courts and Courts Martial. Whilst working part-time for a Local Authority he has developed an expertise in the defence and prosecution of ASBO cases and has also prosecuted other aspects of ASB work including closure orders and injunctions under the Local Government Act.
Course Aim
Participants will acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence to accurately record evidence and effectively present evidence in court.
By the end of the course participants will
√ Improve the content, structure and style of their reports, pocket notebooks and statements
√ Know how to plan and prepare to give evidence in court
√ Know the different court procedures and personalities
√ Be able to manage cross examination effectively

Anyone working in neighbourhoods will find this course a beneficial and helpful way to deal with conflict at an early stage. We at the NTRC believe that working in a restorative way is a really effective way of tackling asb and should be used in settings other than the criminal justice system. That is why we, in conjunction with our National Alliance, have developed this two day accredited interactive training package to provide practitioner training in the use of restorative approaches. Using case studies, practical experience and reflective learning this course will cover the benefits of working in a restorative way, develop the skills required and how to approach asb in a restorative way.
